Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, spends over ₦4.4 billion annually on electricity, consuming about 1.63 million kWh monthly. Despite this huge cost, the university still struggles with unreliable power supply — depending heavily on diesel generators for 35–40% of its needs while grid supply remains erratic. A solar PV project is underway, but ABU’s energy challenge is far from over.

The ABU Energy Innovation Challenge (ABUEIC) is a bold response to this reality. It is a platform designed to tap into the ingenuity of ABU’s students, staff, and alumni to create clean, practical, and sustainable energy solutions that can power the university.
